Jazz

Carlos de Barros is a well-rounded teacher, choreographer, dancer and adjudicator, with an energetic, technical style and challenging class curriculum. He’s an honors scholarship B.F.A. graduate from the New World School of the Arts/University of Florida Dance program. While at New World, Carlos performed in new and re-constructed works by nationally acclaimed choreographers such as Jose Limon, Gerri Houlihan, Freddick Bratcher, Gerard Ebitz, Lila York, Michael Utoff, Gina Buntz and Peter London. He has also danced professionally with the American Dance Theatre and Freddick Bratcher & Company in Miami, Demetrius Klein Dance Company, and now only does guest performing locally.

The last 13 years he has been teaching jazz, modern, and some ballet and ethnic dance at the Bak Middle School of the Arts (BMSOA) in West Palm Beach, FL. He was the founder and Artistic Director of the State Award winning BMSOA Premiere Dancers, his colleagues nominated him 2004 Hispanic Teacher of the Year and two of his pieces from Bak have also been selected to perform at the Florida Dance Festival’s young dancer’s showcases in past years. In addition, he has continued to teach for private studios over the last 17 years. Students who have trained with him have gone on to receive numerous solo titles and have moved on to colleges and companies such as The University of the Arts, New World School of the Arts, Florida State, North Carolina School of the Arts, Juilliard, Marymount, Ballet Hispanico, Colorado Ballet, and The Alvin Ailey 2 Company.

Mr. de Barros has taught for intensive summer programs at The Grier School, The Alabama Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology, and The Harid Conservatory. He does master classes, choreography and adjudication for private studios, performing groups and private companies, as well. He’s been a master teacher and/or adjudicator for The Brevard County Dance Competition, Florida Dance Inc., the Young Dancer’s Workshops sponsored by the Florida Dance Association, Dance Master’s of America chapter #2, Star Power, The All-American Dance Festival at the Hard Rock Live, Rochester Invitational, Florida Dance Teachers Director’s Association, and Starquest International.
